Our eldest turned sixteen recently.
That one birthday has made me look back at the years when the children were little, money was tight, and life felt like one long list. School runs, work, clubs, tea, laundry, repeat. Days were full, but the weeks vanished.
Back then we didn’t do far-flung holidays. We stayed in the UK because it was realistic. And honestly, we loved a caravan holiday. There was something about it that worked for family life. You arrived, unpacked once, and the pace changed.
Wet shoes by the door. Card games when the weather turned. Little routines that weren’t really routines at all, because everyone was together. Those were the breaks that still get mentioned now, years later, around our dinner table.
And here’s the part I didn’t fully understand at the time.
Those trips weren’t just “a holiday”. They were a reset button.
The Moment I Realised Time Was Slipping Away
If you have more than one child, you know how quickly life becomes logistics.
Someone needs a lift. Someone’s got training. Someone’s hungry. Someone’s lost a kit bag. You do the same day on repeat, and then suddenly the kids are taller, louder, and off in ten different directions.
Then one of them turns sixteen.
That’s when it hits you: the best family memories aren’t usually made in big, expensive moments. They’re made in the simple ones, when life slows down enough for you to actually talk. To laugh. To notice each other.
That realisation is at the heart of why Camping at Cardewlees exists.
Why We Founded Camping at Cardewlees
Camping at Cardewlees wasn’t started because we thought the world needed “another campsite”.
It was founded because we needed something ourselves.
We wanted to create a place that would help busy families make memories, the way our UK caravan holidays did for us. A short break that felt easy to say yes to. A place where children could run and explore, and parents could stop scrolling, stop rushing, and actually breathe.
But there was a second reason too, and it’s the one I don’t think people talk about enough.
We also hoped that by opening Camping at Cardewlees, we could improve the work-life balance of our own family.
When you run a business, it’s easy to put everything into it. Easy to live in “just get through this week” mode. Easy to tell yourself you’ll slow down later.
Later has a habit of not arriving.
So we built something that aligned with the life we wanted: more fresh air, more time together, more of those simple moments that actually stick.
Camping at Cardewlees was our way of choosing a different rhythm.
What We Wanted to Offer Families Like Ours
We designed Camping at Cardewlees around one goal:
Make it simple for families to spend proper time together.
Not a “perfect” holiday. Not a forced, jam-packed itinerary. Just a UK break where you can arrive, settle, and let life feel lighter for a few days.
We’re a family-friendly campsite and glamping stay in Cumbria, near Carlisle, and everything here is aimed at giving you that caravan-holiday feeling, without the stress.
Why Families Choose Camping at Cardewlees

A Little Nudge From Someone Who’s Been There
If you’re in the thick of it right now, juggling school, work, clubs, and everything else, I’ll say what I wish someone had said to me years ago:
Don’t wait for life to calm down before you make time together.
It rarely does.
The weekends and school holidays go quickly, and diaries fill up fast. If you’ve been thinking about booking, now is the moment.
